How to Write a Play
Scene 1
In a classroom with a computer in the corner.
Mrs. Eckard: Good morning class. Did everyone have a nice day yesterday?
Gabby: Yep.
Stuart: I didn't. I failed a test.
Mrs. Eckard: Well, I'm sorry about that. It is, however, about time for us to start writing our scenes. Go
ahead and get out your paper.
(The class gets out papers.)
George: (Puts his hand up.) Mrs. Eckard. I don't know how to write a play.
Mrs. Eckard: Well, I'll show you. (She goes to the computer.) See, plays are written in words you say
out loud. You can't put people's thoughts in a play...only things they say, and do. To start,
you'll write the characters name, then a colon, and then what they say. Anything that is an
action, well, that's gonna go inside some parentheses. You see?
George: Oh. Yes. Kind of.
Mrs. Eckard: Well, I'll show you on the screen. Class, please look up at the screen while I type out a scene.
(She types out a scene.) Any questions?
Gabby: Nope. We're good.
Mrs. Eckard: Great. Thanks folks! You can write your scene now. Enjoy!
The students beging typing.
Fin.
